We are in the customer service business. We just happen to sell cars.
About Sewell
A family-owned business for more than a century, Sewell has always been focused on customer service. From the day we opened our doors to customers in 1911, we have been fueled by genuine care, steered by attention to detail, and driven by the goal to be the best at serving people exceptionally.
A Heart of Service
At Sewell, our commitment to service extends beyond our customers to the people and places surrounding us. By supporting hundreds of charitable and nonprofit organizations, we are honored to participate in their incredible work of giving back and improving the communities we have the privilege to serve.
1911 - In 1911, Carl Sewell Sr. began selling automobiles out of the family’s general store, which was also a movie theater and livery stable.
1929 - When the Great Depression hit in 1929, the three banks entrusted with Carl Sewell Sr.’s savings all closed on the same day. But rather than giving up, he packed up his dreams and headed to the tiny town of Crane in the newly discovered West Texas oil fields. There, he started not only a successful car business but also a courtship with his future wife, Louise.
1941 - In 1941, Carl Sr.’s philosophy of serving customers was a welcome comfort in hard times, and the Sewell business was thriving in West Texas. But driven by his desire to serve more people, Carl and Louise decided to bring their brand of service back to Dallas.
1957 - Sewell Village Cadillac opened at Mockingbird Lane and Preston Road in 1957, combining luxury automobiles and the already-famous Sewell style of customer service. Carl Sewell II began working at the dealership under the guidance of his father, Carl Sewell I.
1972 - On May 5, 1972, Carl Sewell Sr. passed away – but not before selling a Cadillac earlier that day. His principles of service lived on through the leadership of his cousin John and his son Carl Sewell Jr., and the business continued to grow.
1980 - By 1980, business had grown so much that Sewell needed bigger quarters. So they moved to an 8.6-acre area on Lemmon Avenue, across from Love Field, while also opening a Cadillac store in San Antonio.
1989 - In 1989, a new luxury marque called Lexus was introduced to the world, and Sewell was selected as one of North America’s charter Lexus dealers. Soon after, the newest alliance of luxury vehicles and obsessive service opened its doors on Lemmon Avenue.
1990 - In 1990, Carl Sewell put pen to paper and shared his service secrets in the internationally bestselling book, Customers for Life. The book sold over 1 million copies and is still in print (and in e-book form) today.
1994 - 1994 was a busy year for the Sewell family as they welcomed GMC, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile to their growing presence on Lemmon Avenue.
1998 - In 1998, Sewell expanded both its DFW footprint and shining reputation with the acquisition of Hillard Lexus in Fort Worth and Dallas’ Rodger Meier dealerships, welcoming INFINITI and another Cadillac location into the family.
2002 - In 2002, Sewell INFINITI made room for its continued growth, relocating to a more spacious and prominent location at the corner of Lemmon and University in Dallas.
2004 - The Sewell service philosophy expanded to Grapevine, Texas, in 2004 with the opening of Sewell Cadillac of Grapevine near DFW International Airport.
2009 - In 2009, Houston welcomed the arrival of obsessive service and high-performance luxury to their city, as Sewell INFINITI of North Houston opened a newly acquired showroom on I-45.
2010 - In 2010, Sewell continued to expand, bringing matchless service to distinguished manufacturers by acquiring Audi North Houston and opening its first Subaru store in Dallas.
2011 - In 2011, Sewell marked 100 years in business – a century of serving people with such inspired care, customers passed their loyalty down through generations. Sewell celebrated this milestone by adding to the family, unveiling its latest Cadillac store in West Houston and a new Sewell INFINITI store in Fort Worth.
2016 - An era of unprecedented growth began in 2016 with the opening of two new Sewell stores, including a second Houston-area Audi store in Sugar Land and the first Sewell Mercedes-Benz store in the energy corridor in West Houston.
2017 - In 2017, Sewell opened two new stores in Dallas-Fort Worth. The first Sewell BMW store opened in the growing community of Grapevine, while a new Audi dealership opened in McKinney.
2020 - In July of 2020, Sewell expanded into Austin, acquiring Land Rover North Austin, which had been newly constructed in February.
2021 - In October 2021, Sewell acquired Classic BMW, spreading their legacy of outstanding service to even more Dallas-Fort Worth BMW owners. With the acquisition, Sewell also returned to serving MINI customers in Plano at the 24-acre Sewell BMW MINI of Plano.
2023 - In 2023, Sewell was honored to be selected by INEOS Grenadier as one of only 19 charter dealerships in the United States. The world-class Sewell INEOS Grenadier store opened in Plano in October and delivered the very first Grenadier in the U.S. on Black Friday.
2024 - In November of 2024, Sewell opened its second INEOS Grenadier location. Located in San Antonio, the 4,100-square-foot facility is surrounded by trees, giving it a park-like atmosphere.
